Amazon Beats Google for .Buy and List of New GLTDs

ICANN has allowed companies to submit applications and apply new premium GTLD’s last week which has created a bit of a stir, turns out 1,930 applications were created in total. So what did the total numbers come out to anyway? Well Google’s bids came to $18.6 million in total and they’re not even promised to receive all the new tld’s! Turns out though that Amazon and Google bid on 24 of the same gtld’s and have yet to find out who won on all of them, the list though includes .app, .baby, .blog, .book all of which had over five applicants a piece. We didn’t seem to see many applications from the Chinese which came as a bit of a surprise and Yahoo! seemed to only bid on .yahoo and .flckr

Some might find it interesting that the top level domain .buy was bid on by four companies, the final price coming to a whopping $6.4 million purchased by Amazon. One of the bidders Charleston Road Registry who bid on 101 of the tld’s including  .web, .tech, .cloud, .search AND .google is…guess…none other than Google itself! Why the name change? Because Google will soon be competing with Godaddy.com as a registrar of their own and to actually own a gtld (.cloud, .web, etc..) would be considered a conflict of interest. Why Charleston Road Registry as their name? Simple, the Googleplex building is between two streets, Amphitheatre Pkwy and Charleston Road.
