I have people asking me “What do you think would be a great brand for my website?”, they then give me a wide array of domains such as: Pleskia.com, Darus.com, Sallsy.com. While these may sound great and you see some corporate giants with brandable names I do not believe them the best for an online presence.

Look at some of the corporate giants online: MySpace.com, YouTube.com, FaceBook.com and others. While these may be brandable you also get a sense of what the website does, on top of that they’re catchy and fun. Let’s take other online brands into account: CheapFlights.com, Travelocity.com (“Travel-O-City” hmmm..), Shopzilla.com, OverStock.com etc.. These names are more on targetas to what the company does.

I believe that the domain should match your goals, if you are looking to start a video site on music videos than something a little more brandable would do fine. On the other hand, if you’re selling posters online catchy is good but you want the name to describe what you do, a domain name is the first thing your prospects see so it is best served describing your intent! In this case, PosterMart.com might be a better fit SEO and intent wise than Ploosh.com .
