So you want to know how I did it?

Take a look at this link, that’s me in the first paragraph selling DrunkDriving.com for $60,000

I am by no means a pompous person but it does feel nice when you close a five to six figure sale on a domain name. There is little work involved in the actual transaction, unlike a stock or piece of real estate there are no attachments (other than email boxes) or something you can miss and most of the time the domain sells itself! There’s no pitching, follow up calls or repeated emails asking if he or she received the proposal. Just a “No I’m not interested” or, “I am interested and here is my offer.”. Well, maybe not that smooth but smoother than any other industry I’ve been in and I’ve been in ALOT.

So what do I look for when I’m prospecting for good domains? Here’s my top ten:

1. Google Keywords – This shows how many times the keywords are typed in.

2. The TLD – .com, .net, .org . . You want five figures? Let’s stick to .com for now.

3. Is it a common term? Use common sense, if it sounds like the domain is worth alot than bingo!

4. Stick to an online industry – Alot of people in my industry say “category killer”, this is because if DrunkDriving.com is developed correctly it can reach the top of Google for the keywords and the webmaster can make alot of money from the traffic! (ie: sending it to DUI Lawyers and so on..)

5. Short and brandable – DrunkDriving.com might be a little long but try to stick to one word .com’s, two words at most and stick it all to under ten letters.

6. Say the domain to a friend and see their reaction, if they say, “You own that??”. Bingo.

7. Type the keywords into Google and look at advertisers. People pay to be on the front page of Google, you will see that on the right side and top as paid advertising. Type the keywords into Google and see how many paid advertisers you see. If they go on to the 2nd page, 3rd page and more…Bingo!

8. Is it easily spelled? I just sold Custody.com, much easier to spell than Hemorrhage.com .

9. Is it a call to action? Slots.com just sold for $5 million dollars, hey that’s Vegas baby! You think of a big wheel buzzing and machines going off!

10. Does the industry make MONEY?! Wedding.com, Bikes.com, Lawyer.com, all of these are industries that make ALOT of money online. While these domains are impossible to get your hands they’re just used as an example, there are still good domains out there at reasonable prices and deals are being done every single day.

In the next blog I’ll be exploring how to find the company to buy it!
