The process of ‘domain pushing’ is often confused with ‘domain transferring.’ A large number of website owners and internet users do not understand the basic difference between domain push and domain transfer. Even experienced internet entrepreneurs can be seen confusing these two terms on various online forums and communities.
The process of pushing a domain is all about moving a domain from one user to another within the ‘same’ registrar. In this case, only registrants are changed and not the registrar. For example, you can move a domain ABC(dot) com from your account on GoDaddy to someone else’s account on GoDaddy. On the other hand, domain transfer is essentially the process of moving a domain from one registrar to another. Domain transfer is usually the process you’d choose if the domain registrar fails to deliver satisfactory services. For example, you can move your domain ABC(dot)com from GoDaddy to NameCheap if you are not happy with the services with the former. Domain transfers are also done for other reasons including the availability of a combo hosting package or domain sale.
The Domain Pushing Process
- First of all, login into your account with the registrar.
- Once you are logged in, you need to go to a section where domains are managed. Most domain registrar portals show it as ‘Domain Management’ or ‘Manage Domains.’ There can be some name variations though.
- Choose the domain that you want to push or move to somebody else’s account.
- Enter the name of the destination user name.
The website portal will ask for your account password for confirmation. In some cases, you may be required to enter an additional authorization code during domain pushing. Such codes are needed during a domain push only when the destination account has turned on extra security features. You can just ask the destination user for this password and enter it at the time of domain push. Destination user can find this code in Push settings. These settings are generally present on a user’s profile page. You can leave the code field empty during domain-push if no authorization code is present in destination user’s push settings. Domain transfers can be complicated at times. In some cases, you cannot even conclude a domain transfer process within a desired time frame.
